About ICANN’s registration data lookup tool
The ICANN registration data lookup tool gives you the ability to look up the current registration data for domain names and Internet number resources. The tool uses the Registration Data Access Protocol (RDAP) which was created as a replacement of the WHOIS (port 43) protocol. RDAP was developed by the technical community in the [Internet Engineering Task Force](https://www.ietf.org/) (IETF).
RDAP has several advantages over the WHOIS protocol, including more secure access to data, a standardized and user-friendly format, support for internationalization, and the ability to provide differentiated access to registration data. Nonpublic registration data
To request access to nonpublic registration data, use the [Registration Data Request Service](https://rdrs.icann.org/) (RDRS). Please make sure you have first checked that the data is unavailable through the lookup tool. The RDRS is intended for use by those with a legitimate interest in nonpublic data like law enforcement, intellectual property professionals, consumer protection advocates, cybersecurity professionals, and government officials. REGISTRATION DATA LOOKUP TOOL TERMS OF USE
------------------------------------------
The registration data lookup tool conducts Registration Data Access Protocol (RDAP) queries. [RDAP](https://www.icann.org/rdap) enables users to access current registration data and was created as an eventual replacement for the WHOIS protocol. The results displayed come directly from registry operators and/or registrars in real-time. ICANN does not generate, collect, retain, or store any data associated with an RDAP compliant lookup. For domain name queries, if the queried information is not available in RDAP, the query will be redirected to the WHOIS service of the corresponding gTLD registry operator (WHOIS failover lookup). In cases of WHOIS failover lookups, ICANN may generate, collect, retain or store the domain name queried and the results for the transitory duration necessary to show results in response to real-time queries.
The registration data lookup tool and WHOIS failover lookup results are shown to help users obtain information about domain name registration records, and for no other purpose. Users agree to use this data only for lawful purposes in accordance with the ICANN [Privacy Policy](https://www.icann.org/privacy/policy) and the website [Terms of Service](https://www.icann.org/privacy/tos). ICANN reserves the right to restrict or terminate your access to the data and/or the registration data lookup tool if you fail to abide by these Terms of Use.
