Trickle-down cryptonomics.

It’s not surprising that the [government’s crypto reserve](/cryptocurrency/624108/crypto-reserve-bitcoin-trump-grift) involves Bitcoin and Ethereum, but the other three coins seem kind of random — Cardano (have _you_ heard of it???), XRP, and Solana. _Popular Information_ dug deeper and identified a few politically-connected entities involved. There’s Ripple, [the company that created XRP](/2023/7/13/23793815/ripple-xrp-howey-sec-token-security), which donated tens of millions to Republican super PACs and candidates like Trump in the 2024 election. Then there’s Solana, which backs memecoins like $TRUMP and $MELANIA. And to nobody’s surprise, [David Sacks](/2024/12/5/24314514/trump-david-sacks-white-house-ai-crypto-czar) is also all up in the mix.

Apple’s rumored smart display might run Messages

_MacRumors_ spotted code in the latest iOS 18.4 beta that adds the ChatKit framework to tvOS. This is how Apple devices handle SMS, MMS, and iMessage. However, tvOS is the operating system for HomePods and Apple TVs, neither of which run the Messages app.

So, this could be an indication that the Messages app is coming to a new device that runs on tvOS, such as the long-rumored [Apple smart display](/2024/7/16/24195063/apple-smart-display-rumors-homepod-ipad).

Is this really the last of The Last of Us?

In a new interview in _Variety_, Neil Druckmann, creative director of _The Last of Us_ series, doesn’t seem confident the popular game turned HBO hit will get a third installment. “I guess the only thing I would say is don’t bet on there being more of ‘Last of Us.’ This could be it,” he says in the interview.

Ryanair will end paper boarding passes and check-in fees.

The European economy airline had plans to go all digital with boarding passes by May, but now the change will happen starting November 3rd. Ryanair hasn’t said how passengers who can’t access the app will get their boarding passes, but it did share that 80 percent of its annual passengers use digital passes.

The Escura InstantSnap camera looks like an instant photo.

Arriving sometime in April 2025 for around $45, the InstantSnap features a fun design resembling a photo that just popped out of a Polaroid camera. Inside its white frame is a transparent viewfinder with framing guides, but there’s no screen, and images and videos are saved to a microSD card.

Even if you’re into a lo-fi aesthetic, the 1.3-megapixel InstantSnap’s image quality might disappoint, based on [sample images the company shared with Digital Camera World](https://www.digitalcameraworld.com/cameras/compact-cameras/this-gadget-looks-like-a-retro-instant-film-photo-but-its-actually-a-weirdly-cool-digital-camera).

Elon Musk isn’t selling a diabetes cure.

Contrary to what Facebook ad scams are promoting via deepfake videos of Fox News personalities, Musk hasn’t discovered “one simple trick” to reverse the blood sugar condition. Most of these ads, which [_Engadget_](https://www.engadget.com/social-media/facebook-scammers-want-you-to-think-elon-musk-can-cure-diabetes-153042842.html) started noticing in early February, are linking viewers to unproven supplements that “big pharma” doesn’t want you to see.

It’s common for fraudsters to use AI-manipulations in [“celeb bait” scams](/2024/10/22/24276593/meta-facebook-instagram-facial-recognition-tools-test-celeb-bait). Meta is in the process of investigating and removing the ads.

Nintendo Japan has run out of New 3DS XL and 2DS replacement parts.

Following an [announcement last August](/2024/8/29/24231761/nintendo-japan-has-out-of-new-3ds-parts) that it had run out of replacement parts for the New 3DS, [Nintendo Japan now says](https://support.nintendo.com/jp/information/2024/0213.html) it has run out of parts for the New 3DS XL and the 2DS. As a result, it will no longer be able to repair either of those handhelds for Japanese gamers.

Apple dropped Space Gray from the MacBook Air line with the [new M4 models](/news/620695/apple-m4-macbook-air-13-15-announcement-price-specs) today, leaving the longstanding Apple color option only available on the latest iPad Air and iPad Mini models, as _9to5Mac_ has spotted.

Darker MacBooks come in Space Black or Midnight these days. Like _9to5Mac_ notes, “Space Gray” was never one specific color.

Google’s AR beauty tool now lets you try on looks inspired by trends or celebrities.

The feature, which rolls out in the US this week, will let you try on different looks, like “soft glam” or “spring makeup,” as well as shop for the products that go along with it.

Google is also expanding its [virtual try-on feature](/2023/6/14/23760504/google-shopping-ai-modeling-virtual-try-on-search-filters) to pants and skirts, and will now let all users in the US [use AI to envision](/2023/11/16/23963583/google-search-generative-experience-shopping-ai-images) and search for specific pieces of clothing.

Large language models are cheaters, too.

Researchers have observed large language models in hundreds of matches with an open-source chess engine. They found that the models often try to “hack” the game without being prompted to do so, even by overwriting the chessboard to “delete its opponent’s pieces.” Why? They don’t have to tell you.

Another day, another round of Disney layoffs.

Disney is reportedly [laying off 200 employees](https://www.wsj.com/business/media/disney-to-cut-nearly-6-staff-across-abc-news-disney-entertainment-networks-8af04b40) (about 6 percent of its workforce) from its ABC News Group and Disney Entertainment Networks units.

The latest round of firings will impact ABC’s _20/20_ and _Nightline_ news magazine shows, whose production teams are being consolidated into a single unit. Time to update your... PS3?

Sony just issued a new update for the nearly 20-year-old console. This brings the software up to version 4.92 and, [as _Eurogamer_ notes](https://www.eurogamer.net/sonys-ps3-gets-new-system-software-update-19-years-after-release), these updates are an annual occurrence to renew the Blu-ray player’s encryption key, so that you can still use the PS3 for watching new movies.

UK antitrust watchdog clears Microsoft’s OpenAI partnership.

The Competition and Markets Authority has ruled that the relationship between the two companies “does not qualify for investigation” under merger rules. The [CMA said in 2023](/2023/12/8/23993302/the-uks-antitrust-watchdog-has-eyes-on-microsofts-partnership-with-openai) that it was assessing whether [Microsoft’s $13 billion investment](/2023/1/23/23567448/microsoft-openai-partnership-extension-ai) into the AI startup gave it de facto control over OpenAI policy.

While now satisfied that it doesn’t, the CMA says that Microsoft “instead exerts a high level of material influence over that policy.”
