“It is very unusual for any scholar, much less a junior scholar, to fundamentally change the terms of the debate over the meaning of the Constitution, and Jud’s scholarship has done that.” Professors at Stanford Law and other institutions paid tribute to Stanford Law’s Jud Campbell in a [...](#)recent tribute video from the Federalist Society, which awarded Campbell its 2025 Joseph Story Award on March 8 at the organization's 44th Annual National Student Symposium. The award recognizes a junior academic (10 years or less on the tenure track or 40 and under) who has “demonstrated excellence in legal scholarship, a commitment to teaching, a concern for students, and who has made a significant public impact in a manner that advances the rule of law in a free society.” Congratulations Professor Campbell!

On Feb. 25, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in Lackey v. Stinnie that plaintiffs who obtain a preliminary injunction that provides plaintiffs concrete, irreversible relief are not “prevailing parties” under 42 U.S.C. § 1988(b) and are therefore ineligible for attorney’s fees.

[...](#)Stanford Law Professor Nora Freeman Engstrom and Rhode Center Civil Justice Fellow Kelsea Jeon (SLS ‘25) examine the ruling and its implications for plaintiffs’ access to justice in a recent Q&A session.
